Will Dua Lipa Become The Katy Perry Of This Generation?

Hello Everyone!

Last year and this year have proven to be Dua's years. She has completely taken over the pop scene with her sophomore era "Future Nostalgia" which has become even bigger this year. The album has won a grammy, has over 2 billion streams, bagged up 4 smash hits, is the best selling female album of the US (2021), has received massive critical acclaim, sold 4 million units WW and is now on track to get Dua's first ever #1 with Levitating. Not only does it have huge success, but has also been credited to the revival of disco music and 80s synth pop we witnessed last year.

So It'd be pretty much an understatement to say the era was just huge, considering that it has become some of the biggest pop eras of the past 5 years and has become a milestone in Dua's career and legacy in the future. However, a worry has arise among pop culture stans who believe that with the trajectory Dua is heading with is similar to that of Katy Perry's legacy. Why? Well...

In 2008, a 23 year old Katy Perry released the hit single "I Kissed A Gurl" which become a huge breakthrough for her career after her debut gospel-rock album "Katy Hudson" failed to even sell over 1k copies. She eventually released her second studio effort "One Of The Boys" which become a pretty big hit, staying 90+ weeks in the billboard hot 200, and selling 10 million units WW.  However, this wouldn't be Katy's peak as she was destined for something even bigger. In 2010, she started her era titled as "Teenage Dream" which become a phenomenal success. Suddenly, Katy Perry become even bigger of a celebrity and pop star than she was earlier. She reached a peak that only a few such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Britney, Madonna and Michael have seen. She followed it up with an even more successful era which was "PRISM". Between 2008-2015, it could not be denied that she was a global phenomenon. Her songs were everywhere, the radio loved her, kids loved her, the GP loved her...However, this glory wouldn't be last for too long.

Katy Perry followed up these 3 extremely successful eras with the notorious era "Witness". Let us just say, things didn't go the way Katy expected. We witnessed some of the greatest declines that year, as the album failed to half of the success of her previous eras. It's only savior was "Chained To The Rhythm" which was the only hit of the era. However, even this song could not help better the performance of the record. In the end, the album fell into oblivion and Katy Perry's earlier power faded away. She tried to come back with SMILE, but the era even ended up performing worse than "Witness", becoming her first album since Katy Hudson to sell below a 100k in its first week. Nowadays, Katy Perry is honestly seen as a memory of the millennials and generation z of their school/college days and has pretty much become a fad of the early to mid 2010's.

So what is the elephant in the room? It's fair to say that Future Nostalgia is pretty much the "Teenage Dream" of her career. The era received humongous amounts of success and is already being seen as the biggest pop era of the 2020's. However, it is feared that she will end up as Katy. Akin, her third follow-up will become a massive era but from there onwards, she will fall into oblivion. Why? Because she has many of the things that Katy had which inevitably led to her downfall. Dua despite the massive amount of support she has does not have a strong and loyal fanbase. She has the GP's support but will she end up as Katy Perry if the GP lose interest in her or her stans will be able to keep her relevant. Second, her team has been doing amazing in promoting but will this lead to overexposure. Thirdly, will Dua be able to blend with the shift in pop culture and will competition and market be much more higher?

I’ve been in love with  Dua since her beginning. I have to admit that I was a bit nervous about how her sophomore album would turn out, sonically and commercially. 
She shut my mouth. Therefore, I trust she will do something great in the future. 
As for her being the next Katy, I hope this just translates into her just becoming as big. 
I think that Katy’s charisma turned into annoyance at the end, leading the GP and fans to lose interest. 
I don’t think that will be Dua’s case, she’s also really charismatic but not in a silly way. 
Anyhow, I hope she continues to make wonderful music and people are willing to listen, because she’s got so much more to prove and the potential to do it.

People in real life don't even care about who Dua Lipa is, she's not that interesting as a celebrity/person. She's really just there. It's payola-core.

They hear Dua Lipa songs on the radio or on Youtube because the algorithm keeps spamming her stuff people but don't really care about who sings those songs, she has the Camilla Cabello syndrome, everybody knew Havana but nobody cared about Camilla.

I've never met a person that listens to Dua Lipa all her fans are just on Twitter or pop forums it's really weird.

• She actually evolved her sound and adjusted to the (non-existent) pop music landscape by riding the retro future wave and cleverly becoming the face of it despite not starting it.

Dua is all about classiness, she has a lot of Britney energy. An humble Queen.

I think like Katy with Teenage Dream, Dua will have a hard time recreating/maintaining the success she’s had with Future Nostalgia. It’s really hard to maintain that level of success especially in today’s world of streaming and whatnot where people move on to the next thing so quickly. I feel as though Dua like Katy isn’t creating a dedicated fan base because she herself isn’t very interesting...people aren’t really invested in her the artist they just think her songs are cool. I feel as though long term success comes from artists that not only make great music but form a strong connection with fans. Like Britney, Madonna, Janet, Mariah for example they have extremely dedicated fans because they formed that connection with their personality/presence as well as their work!
