Remembering the song, "Britney", by Bebo Norman

Back in 2008, during the height of the drama surrounding Britney, CCM recording artist, Bebo Norman, released a single called "Britney. To me, this song was not only a beautiful tribute to our favorite pop star, but also an apology and social commentary on the way the media/public scrutinizes those in the public eye.

When asked about the song, Norman said:

"'Britney' is a song about what our culture says and does to young women these days. It's about the lies we tell them about fame and money and what's beautiful and what will give them life. It's an apology for those lies. But more than that, it's an invitation to the truth about a God who is bigger than the pain this world so often leaves them in."

I was already a big fan of Norman prior to the release, but this song made me love him even more back then. I've always thought it was incredibly under-rated and it never received the recognition it deserved. Now, in the wake of the #freebritney movement and how people are finally starting to understand and sympathize with her situation, I think the song deserves more attention and respect! As a Christian, I know first-hand that it was a huge career risk for Bebo Norman to release a song about Britney during this time. If you've never heard it, give it a listen.
