Over the last few days, Mexican singer Thalia has celebrated the digital release of her first three records, which original came out three decades ago. On January 31, they occupied the top two positions on the Mexican iTunes chart, as well as the #4:

  • Thalía (1990) - #1
  • Love (1992) - #2
  • Mundo de Cristal (1991) - #4

These three albums were Thalia's first solo efforts after being a member of one of the biggest Latin American pop bands, Timbiriche, from 1986 to 1989. Released through the now defunct record label Melody / Fonovisa, they had been absent from digital stores, until last week.

Parallel to her singing career, she was the co-host of a TV show in Spain, VIP Noche, and in 1992 she starred on what would be one of the most successful gigs of her career, the "María's Trilogy" of telenovelas, three soap operas that were seen by more than 2.2 billion people around the world across 182 countries: María Mercedes (1992), Marimar (1994) and María la del Barrio (1995). Her last telenovela would be Rosalinda in 1999.

In 1994 she signed with EMI, with which she recorded 7 studio albums, and since 2012 she's released 6 more studio albums, this time with Sony Music, as well as two live albums.

I’m not familiar with Latin music but isn’t due Tommy Motolla’s wife? (Not trying to discredit her accomplishments here)

yeah, they married in 2000. But she's actually never been under any Tommy Motolla's label. She was on EMI since before they married, then she changed to Sony-BMG, but Tommy had already left Sony by then.

Tbh, I think she was the most successful, at least internationally, in the 90's, before getting married. She's got a few hits in the last decade, but she doesn't promote or tour as much anymore, maybe also because she's a mom now, but yeah, I always felt her career kinda halted after the marriage. I mean, she did continue releasing stuff, but nothing compared to her biggest hits. From 1990 when she started as a solo, to 2000 when she released her most successful album Arrasando, her career and fame had grown so much, that the obvious thing would've been that after that the growth would be exponential, like it happened with Shakira for example. Instead, her popularity started to decrease. It wasn't until she released her first album with Sony, Primera Fila, which is an acoustic album, that she became popular and respected again, but after that it's only been hit or miss with her singles.

She has a strong presence on social media though, she's actually gone viral with one livestream she did a couple of years ago, and she did have this massive hit No Me Acuerdo featuring Natti Natasha in 2018.

But at least among pop fans she's still very current, it's just that urban music has taken the place that pop used to have, so actually all the pop artists in general have encountered the same fate as her. What I do admire about her is that she is very connected with her fans, she's always giving a lot of feedback and content, like, for example in the past couple of years she's been uploading HD versions of all of her music videos, even alternative versions and live performances, and has even created lyric videos for album tracks that were never singles. And last year she released lots of singles throughout the year.

I didn't know that her first albums were not on digital platforms. I've been streaming En La Intimidad for a long time on Spotify :carpoolney_dance_karaoke_glory_sunglasses_party_raise_roof:

Btw, I love your posts about Latin pop, which nowadays seems to be dead :otears_oprah_crying_tissue_napkin_tears_sobbing_sad:

Great post!! I am glad to see she released the albums on spotify. I recall during the facebook series with Farina and Sofia Reyes, she mentioned that the time when she released her first albums, are full of sad memories and pain because people didn't accept her and rejected her. It is good to see she can overcome the pain.

She was very criticized at first. She came from this very bubblegum pop band, and all of a sudden she was singing about S&M with a very provocative and aggressive image. Her fashion choices were also very outrageous, she was doing most of the things that Gaga, Miley or Katy Perry did two decades later, and some of her albums tracks weren't that good tbh :haha_britney_laugh_lol_lmao_hehe_haha_bw_black_white: but the singles were usually really good :donewithit_carpool_karaoke_britney_glory_hand_telling_talking_chatting_wave_waving:

Also the producer and songwriter of most of the songs of those albums, was her boyfriend, which was the son of an ex-president, and was waaay older than her. He passed away in 1994 I think, and it did take a toll on her. A lot of people didn't see that relationship very good.

She became more loved by the public after she starred on the trilogy of telenovelas, that really pushed her popularity and fame around the world (that's when she became like some sort of goddess in Philippines).

By the time she released her fourth album, she had already gained a better place in the public's heart, and it was much more successful than the previous three.

Not a huge fan of her first 3 albums to be honest, maybe with them being available on streaming services I might try to revisit them.

En éxtasis was the first album I heard from her, since she promoted a lot in Brazil because of her telenovelas back in the 90s, and it's bop after bop. Piel Morena, Amándote, Gracias a Dios, and so on. En éxtasis, Amor a la Mexicana, Thalia and El ***to Sentido are my favorite albums of her.

The fact that she's still relevant and releasing bops is awesome. :kylie_proud_yes_wow_impressive_amazing:

For real, is one of my favorite songs :haha_britney_laugh_lol_lmao_hehe_haha_bw_black_white:

María la del Barrio also appears on En Éxtasis and Rosalinda appears on Arrasando.

Marimar I think it had its own soundtrack album, or maybe it was some sort of EP

yeah, especially since the original story it was based on, a Venezuelan telenovela, was called María Teresa.

who knows who decided that, but I think that's why it flopped :haha_britney_laugh_lol_lmao_hehe_haha_bw_black_white:

the song is still really good though :bop_beyonce_dancing_yes_Yas_cheer_party_glasses:
