but for real i think there are a lot of teenagers that are into retro pop culture right now, you can see it with internet music sub-genres such as vaporwave or synthwave that rely a lot on 80s nostalgia

with the internet you can pretty much access to everything, so to me it's not about age but more about what the media/industry puts forward

the mainstream landscape is a bit underwhelming right now

I don't think it's that younger celebs don't have charisma, I think as we get older we don't identify with them so we don't see the appeal.

but like, if you compare disney teen idols from the late 90s early 00s to the disney idols of today you can already see that there's a slight difference, i was mostly referring to the current high school musical cast, i think disney has been going downhill since 2010

I'd say it's just a shift of tone in pop culture. Like, you take Demi, Miley and Selena who were miles more interesting in the early 2010s compared to now. 

Regardless pop culture in the 2000s >>>>>>>>>>>> today and there's no competition.

Miley, Demi, Jonas Brothers and Selena starting off were miles more interesting than the Olivia girl, her crusty male co-star and Sabrina Carpenter

Nobody new is a phenomenal singer or dancer like Bey or Britney were when they first came on the scene. The sad thing is that even when we finally get some decent performers, people act as if they can compare to the legends.

It esp got worse in the late 2010s like in the early 2010s there were still interesting new artists but then people just started becoming lazy.

Also with rap too, there are a few good rap artists but the majority of rap artists don't put much effort in, there are a few good ones though and Nicki is an icon.

in the past only real talented people were allowed to be famous now everyone has his chance and a lot of mediocre people have a spotlight that they don't deserve

I agree but then again I might be biased since I'm 27

but I did notice a big change in music starting around 2016, 

it seemed like after that, music got repetitive and boring.

Even with singers I like, they got boring.

The mid 2010s was the last interesting years of music.

Maybe IF Britney releases a new album, it'll shake things up cause

honestly today's music is pretty stale

Yes i totally agree, early 00s Disney was iconic, they so many iconic sitcoms back then, like Zack & Cody, That's So Raven, Hannah Montana, Lizzie Mcguire, etc 

I don't know why but after Hannah Montana ended, the quality went downhill, they haven't made a memorable sitcom since like 2009

I get the impression that today, people want to see celebrities who look more like "real people" and relatable.

In the golden age of pop culture, the entertainment industry had very bold, distinctive celebrities, they didn't look like people that you'd meet on the street. And you could still get a hit in your 50s. Cher had a huge comeback with "Believe" when she was in her 50s. Sadly, i believe this wouldn't be possible today with the extreme obsession with looking young and perfect due to social media...Maybe someone will prove us wrong tho, i could see Rihanna getting a hit in her 50s (if she ever comes back to music...)

I hope one day, people will fight against ageism just as much as they are fighting right now for equality

Yes totally, it seems difficult at the moment to take risks artistically , and I think that this demotivates a lot of artists, you have to be very careful nowadays otherwise you will get called "problematic" etc , the culture of politically correctness, minimalism and relatableness is stronger than before.

I think it’s very much a Beauty/Popularity contest right now thanks to IG/TikTok etc... These people are pretty/viral enough to steal the attention but it’s hard to keep it with no talent or particular skill set.

I hate all this political correctness, its a bunch of bs in my opinion.

If we didnt have that, we'd have great artists and great music.

Political correctness has also went into TV/Movies.

There now always has to be some "political statement" on them and it just takes away the fun of pop culture

There's definitely been a shift in how popstars are marketed/how they market themselves. It used to be all about the glitz, glamor, showmanship, and being larger than life. Now, it's a lot more subdued - the focus is on realism and relatability.
