Earlier:

Shawn Mendes gave Sam Smith a shout-out in a new promo video which aired on television, but in doing so referred to Sam as him/he instead of Sam's pronouns of they/them. 

Twitter had a field day with this one.

I'm sure this wasn't done maliciously. I also don't really see anyone getting that outraged, like they aren't trying to cancel Shawn Mendes or anything.

These days, everyone is aware of the cancel mob. Therefore, it's ridiculous to assume that Shawn is stupid enough to purposely risk jeopardizing his career like this. Clearly, he wasn't aware. I'm fine with this as long as people inform him respectfully. There's no need for pitchforks.

Give Shawn a break, the whole Sam Smith pronoun thing is very confusing and he was only saying nice things about Sam. It gets really confusing to me because "them" implies more than one person so it feels unnatural. I'm all for gender neutrality and identifying however you feel but I don't see how it's insulting to still refer to Sam as "him" or "he" when he was born a male and still is. He's not trans as far as I know.

C'mon! Sam Smith is the biggest pop star in the world! When 'they' announced the pronouns my whole family and friends noted it down to remember.

I even put a sticky note on my fridge as a daily reminder

Lmaooo Sam is clearly a man when it comes to his physical body, he doesn't feel that on spiritual, mental level and that is totally okay BUT I can't imagine the world where we have to look for info about every person if they feel men/women/others when we can clearly see what they are based on appearance. Shawn probably didn't even know about Sam. Like literally chill. The world has bigger problems than that.
