DISCLAIMER: This is in NO way me trying to boast about my CD collection, I'm sure there are many of you with way more than what I got:tbh_britney_nod_yes_yas_ftr_for_the_record_vma_2008_circus: I have just listed everything at the bottom so it's coherent with my results and for future reference when I want to update it etc. :kiss_britney_blowing_pink_candies:

so please don't come for me, I love you guys :kisses2all_britney_pom_piece_of_me_green_blowing_kissing: and the last thing we need on here is more negativity and hatred right?

This is a bit of a random post but... I've been re-ripping my Britney collection onto my hard drive, obviously so I don't have to be streaming and feeding the pockets of Team Con, as well as wanting the best possible quality for my life :cutesybritney_tongue_britney_p_lick:

All of my sources are CD. I am yet to buy anything in 24 bit format because I read something about record labels using 'audible watermarks' for copyright reasons and that stresses me out.  :didilie_nicki_lmao_laugh_haha_lol_hehe_cackle_minaj_hat: In my humble opinion, especially for Britney's earlier work, CDs WERE the market :yaknow_britney_xfactor_X_factor_talk_tell_chat_you_know:, therefore when making the music, they absolutely had that in mind when in the recording studio, as that is the way the majority of people would be listening right? :tbh_britney_nod_yes_yas_ftr_for_the_record_vma_2008_circus: That's my way of thinking. FYI: The ones currently available in 24 Bit are Blackout, Circus, Femme Fatale, Britney Jean and Glory so far, correct me if I'm wrong :ehidk_britney_um_eek:

ANYWAY I DO RAMBLE....:umwtf_britney_wth_um_wow_eyes_big_okay: get to the point boy! :donewithit_carpool_karaoke_britney_glory_hand_telling_talking_chatting_wave_waving:

I have a Mac therefore I rip my CDs using 'XLD'  (rather than EAC which is probably the best free software for Windows platforms) and I do this with the best possible settings, to ensure my collection is LOSSLESS DARLING! :barbie_hair_flip_hairflip_weave_proud_cocky:

I downloaded a Dynamic Range software called 'DROffline' that determines the Dynamic Range of a file. Here's a quick definition for 'Dynamic Range' in music, COURTESY of Google of course, cause I'm not the best with my words and describing things :mattafact_alligator_telling_talking_chatting_preaching_green::yaknow_britney_xfactor_X_factor_talk_tell_chat_you_know:

This means (if you care of course) that 'technically' the higher the DR rating, the more 'dynamic' the song is.

I've found that there isn't actually much difference in Britney's music, considering it is pop, which means compression galore, BUT out of my whole collection, I have compiled a list just for myself, because I am an absolute GEEK :schoolingtime_talking_telling_glasses_preaching::carpoolney_dance_karaoke_glory_sunglasses_party_raise_roof: and I thought I would share with you, just incase ANYONE was interested. :eheeek_britney_unsure_ew_gross_um_awkward_embarrassed_cringe::jl_jamie_lynn_awkward_cringe_eek:

My collection is stuff I have compiled over YEARS, and I am very aware I don't have EVERYTHING at all. I don't have many physical versions of CD singles, but more recently I have been buying them in bits (through eBay mostly, don't worry no lining of Jamie's pockets) and I do want it to grow and eventually have all of the single versions, just so I can compare! :cuteidk_britney_excited_laugh_yes_yas_happy_smile:

Surprisingly, a lot of single versions show different results compared with the same song on an album version and vice versa. I presume this would be down to different people who master the track for single vs albums etc. A lot of people may not notice a difference and sometimes it is really hard to tell, especially If you're not listening on good headphones/speakers. I was shocked to see how much The Singles Collection Album differs to the same songs on The Singles Collection Box Set :idkney_britney_glory_carpool_karaoke_unsure_idk_nervous:

Some of the results really aren't that different, but I've been super accurate down to the last 0.0000001% of things. :verycool_britney_nod_glory_yes_yas_mhmm: I have only listed songs that appear on multiple versions. This excludes Mixes/Remixes, I haven't got that far yet. :ugh_britney_disgust_gross_ew:

P.s let me know if you're like :weirdmeout_umm_ok_what_weirded_britney:  if something doesn't make sense :cheese_Britney_awkward_cringe_eek: OR if you think I've missed something.

P.p.s some people may suggest that later remasters/versions have clipping on the vocals, but all results are from a technical point and what the software is saying, which I am pretty happy with right now :mhm_britney_nodding_yes_mhmm:

THANK YOU FOR TAKING ALL THIS EFFORT.

i heard about an 82 khz (or 96 khz) version of in the zone that is ripped from the DVD special. I saw it on a shady chinese website, not sure if it’s just upsampled CD as the whole thing was shady af.

also are you willing to share the winners of your collection (the rip) with some other audiophile fans like me :cheese_Britney_awkward_cringe_eek:

(Don’t put any links here Jordan might be upset about it).

(p.s what are your opinions on the 24 Bit versions you can download? The tracks should be very clean on the Qobuz store. But i’m not sure if this is the best time to buy them lol.

I will message you the link for the shady website for the in the zone if curiosity gets the better of you lol.

Regarding the first question, since i have only Glory in CD format. It would be nice to have the winners from all ‘The britney essentials’ singles. :tysm_beyonce_thanks_wow_gratitude_love_you_ily:

just PM me a link here on breathheavy that should be fine i guess.

Wait...but like, what are some examples of the same song having different qualities in its various formats?

For instance, can you just share your rundown for, like, “Toxic”...so from CD single, ITZ album, GH:MP, Singles Collection, etc. Which CD provided the best quality/highest DR rating file?

I am not a audiophile, and do not personally give a hoot about having a lossless version. But I am interested in seeing some data points after you said there were surprising differences in quality from CD to CD.

:)

I am super OCD though and love nerding out over details and keeping an immaculate iTunes. My favorite Britney music pastime is trolling YouTube for the best remixes/alternate mixes - particularly ones reimagined from stems and not just vocals thrown over a generic dance beat. I have, like, 7 alternate versions of Breathe On Me, not evening counting the official remixes.

There is a legit 24 bit 88.2 kHz of In The Zone from a DVD.

Yeah, like you said every record had a different mastered process, there was one from late 90s to late 2000s, other in 2009, other in 2010 and from 2011 there's other which is very well done by now. So, the version of, for example, BOMT in the 1999 album wouldn't be same as in The Singles Collection and both wouldn't be the same as in The Essential.

And normally the singles CDs were mastered for radio that's why they sound different. With the new process of mastering since 2011 the dynamic range problem was fixed without losing volume, so is loud but with dynamics

And yeah, Blackout, Circus, Femme Fatale, Britney Jean (Standard) and Glory (even the 2020 version) are the only available in 24 bits and a rip of a DVD of ITZ is around on forums. I could send you links if you wanted

Sorry! I'll edit the top post soon. The differences between the tracks were the numbers from the dynamic range readings really, for example:

Here are screenshot comparisons between two versions of  '...Baby One More Time',

from 'The Singles Collection CD on the left, and the Original Single on the right

Screenshot-2020-11-16-at-02-34-00.pngScreenshot-2020-11-16-at-02-40-58.png

One that shocked me was the difference between '3' on The Singles Collection CD and The Box Set because it was released exactly the same date and is the same song for releases under the SAME NAME for the same thing, but they had different ratings! I don't understand why they wouldn't use the same file you know? :madonna_weird_alien_cuckoo_nuts: but whatever :cheese_Britney_awkward_cringe_eek:

CD on the left Box Set on the right.

Just scrolled through all your findings!

So you mention that pop music has a bunch of compression happening with all the production layers...so would songs coming through with the highest DR potentially have the least amount of layers happening and therefor less loss of quality from compression?

Also, what does “clipping” mean?

:)

I would say technically the higher the DR, the less it will sounds compressed yeah. There is a common trend in the music industry (all genres of popular music - pop/rock etc)  where the people mastering the tracks will turn up the volume on all stems of a track, so it's louder as a whole to ensure that it would 'stands out' more against other competition on the market. It is believed that because of this, the sound gets 'squashed' or doesn't sound nearly as dynamic as it was first intended to be, as well as causing distortion.

Britney's music as a whole is pretty loud anyway, due to it being pop music in the 90s/00s/10s it's bound to be, but the tracks with the highest DR in theory will sound fresher and 'less compressed' I guess yeah, due to there being more varied volume in the tracks. Again there isn't always a heck of a big difference between her tracks.

The 'Loudness War' has been going on since the 1940s when everyone was competing on radio. I suppose it makes sense that if a track is 'louder' it stands out more, but at the end of the day we all have volume controls on everything we play. If we want to turn up a track, we will do it ourselves right.

Clipping is where the volume has been pushed up SO much that it creates distortion. (that's my simple terms)

There's a definition from google in the original post, I'l copy and paste.

Quote

In the simplest sense, audio clipping is a form of waveform distortion. When an amplifier is pushed beyond its maximum limit, it goes into overdrive. The overdriven signal causes the amplifier to attempt to produce an output voltage beyond its capability, which is when clipping occurs. Just as when a loudspeaker is pushed beyond its physical limitations, a digital system can be overloaded at the input stage to the point of clipping. When a signal reaches 0 dBFS (full-scale) on a meter, we’ve run out of headroom and potentially into digital clipping issues. This is because our system has run out of 1s and 0s to accurately convert our signal into digital information. Any excess data is disregarded, which can result in digital clipping–a sine wave hitting its ceiling and becoming a square wave.

Hope that helps :ehidk_britney_um_eek:

Don't waste your time on 24-bit audio. There is no use from it for listening purposes. It is used as a marketing gimmick to sell a supposedly "premium" product.
24-bit dynamic range is useful in recording and processing where you need a lot of dynamic range to not introduce noise after several stages of level mixing, processing and effects.

16-bit (which is the standard in CD and other formats) is enough by a good margin to contain the full dynamic range perceptible to humans. Besides, as soon as music is compressed (no, not digital data compression such as mp3), compressed as in the highs and lows of the sound waves are brough closer to each other, you lose a ton of dynamic range. In other words, no music that have been compressed make use of the full dynamic range of 16-bit audio.

Let me tell you, uncompressed music sounds DULL. There is a reason why we compress music. However, there is a thing as taking it too far which is why we have "the loudness wars" debate.

Dynamic range can refer to different things. When we talk about bits we talk about data storage resolution of different loudness levels. Then there is actual dynamic range of sound which is usually measured in RMS dBFS, which is the average loudness over a short period of time. It is measured in negative values, with pop music averaging in the -10 dBFS to -7 dBFS range RMS. As for the "DR" unit mentioned earlier, that is not really a thing. The standard is dB (in its various variants).
