myonlywish Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Growing up with basic cable TV, I didn't have access to Music channels. So once a week, I would look forward this hour-long program called "The HitList," a music video countdown show intended for kids (most likely the reason why I love Pop music). Once in a while, there would be a segment called "British Invasion," highlighting music from the UK. I noticed there were a lot of Pop groups, and how diverse the music scene was over there... Fast forward to the rise of talent search shows, there was the impression that British Music had some pretty high standards. While I am not familiar with the training process for British Pop Groups, I could only imagine that it would be intense. When the late 2000s/early 2010s arrived, music became easier to access, and there was a highlight on K-Pop. As the popularity continued to grow with Korean Pop, more artists began to speak up on the music industry, what their company expected from them, how to act as a group. Based on the interviews I have seen, dancing and dieting becomes the focus in these K-Pop groups, having to portray an image made by a company. While it has been proven to be a successful method, I wonder if British Pop Music had an influence on Korean Pop Music - at least on a training aspect. What are your thoughts? Did British Pop Music create a standard on Pop Groups? Has Korean Pop Music taken the training on another level? Who do you think makes the better groups?
Super Mods BUWYGF Posted September 23, 2020 Super Mods Posted September 23, 2020 Oh definitely korean pop groups. In fact, I think no other market forces their artists to train as hard as kpop does. It's both good and bad; they do provide us with insane quality and choreography, but a lot of artists end up snapping and killing themselves. Additionally, kpop acts are much more disposable and have a shelf limit of maximum 7-8 years before their label debuts newer, younger faces. I thought this wouldn't be the case with groups such as 2NE1 and SNSD who were literally the gods of kpop, but it happened to them as well. Kpop has a lot of amazing sides, but just as many ugly ones :(
Blackout2006 Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 Korean groups for sure! The pressure in their training is real scary and pressurizing
Slayer Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 I may be biased as i'm British, but I grew up listening to so many great British pop groups Atomic Kitten, S Club 7, Blue, Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Spice Girls etc! Ofcourse slightly 'newer' ones The Saturdays and Little Mix
Slayer Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 On the other hand, I can see how EXTREMELY hard working kpop groups are and I admire that and I absolutely LOVE the amount of choreo they usually bring.
