Even though Britney is obviously the biggest star of this century,

I think there were still some singers or groups who were close to the popularity, success and media coverage like Britney.

I'd say Miley and Justin Bieber were close.

Miley was an international popstar by the time she was 15-16 and had the biggest disney show to date and also did the good girl gone bad persona like Britney.

While Justin became a popstar around the same time and took over the pop world.

They both are controversial yet popular just like how Britney was.

What do you guys think?

Which star do you think had a close prime to Britney?

Since Britney’s debut:

50 Cent

Ariana Grande

Beyonce

Billie Eilish

BTS

Drake

Eminem

Justin Bieber

Lady Gaga

Lil Wayne

Miley Cyrus

One Direction

Rihanna

Shakira (even though she debuted before Britney, she didn’t reach her prime until the 2000s)

Taylor Swift

The five who came extremely close to Britney’s instant megastardom, sales and global dominance however were 1D, 50, Bieber, Em and Gaga. Potentially Billie as well but it’s too hard to say just yet. The others had massive primes or are currently in their respective primes (e.g. Ariana, Billie and BTS).

Justin, most definitely.

He had a very similar start, meaning his first major single Baby made him a hit pop sensation/phenomena over night, much like Hit Me Baby did with Britney. Other celebs who are big today like Ariana, Taylor etc, i feel grew into their fame rather than 'erupted' into it.

Never been convinced by Miley tbh. I'm 26 so i very much grew up with her and i do remember her being super famous but it was almost as if she was pushed onto us a little bit? Even her 'gone bad phase' was so contrived, i vividly remember her saying Can't Be Tamed was inspired by Brit. Whatever the case she most def did not have the same sheer magnetism that Britney had. Today when i ask peoples' opinions on Miley they just say 'oh i used to like Hannah Montana' or 'lol remember that time she rode a wrecking ball naked?'

I was even younger during Britney's time, but i absolutely have never forgotten the absolute magic of her energy/stardom back then, she had everything; dance moves, unique singing voice, *** appeal, adorable personality etc ❤

Edit: i think there is a difference between being ultra famous and being ultra famous with a touch of magic. Think the Kardashians vs people like MJ, Princess Diana & Marilyn... not comparable. Loads of musicians/celebs have reached ultra fame but very few have had the 'magic'.

I don't know, I think there have been very successful artists if you measure it by sales or by awards, or followers, but the thing with Britney is that she had a level of fame and popularity that sadly cannot  be measured with written numbers. She was known everywhere, her image, her songs, her videos, even her scandals. It wasn't just pop fans that knew her, or just the teens, or just the gays, she was known internationally, by all ages, all genders and preferences, whether they liked her or not, since her very first single.

Miley and her Disney shows might have been very popular among kids, but I don't know any adult (I mean, older than me) that knows her, or that knows Hannah Montana or whatever songs she used to sing back then. Maybe 2013 was very important for her, but who was talking about Miley by 2014?

I think Justin Bieber was closer to that, but tbh in my experience, it was more the people that knew him, but hated him, than the ones that really liked him. I remember being in high school when Baby came out, and it was like the biggest joke ever, everybody knew the song, but it was like social suicide if someone liked it, but really, nobody took him seriously. Now, that's where I live, I don't know what people thought about him everywhere else.

Taylor might be the most successful, but, her story was very different than Britney's. First of all, it took her longer to achieve international recognition, and her moves have been more strategically planned. She has a strong fanbase, and knows how to release her music in the most effective way. But can the average person name any of her hits, or identify a video of her, or a song of hers just by looking at an outfit or a picture? Like, you know those kind of vectors or icons they make with the snake or the Toxic outfit, or the BOMT outfit, or Oops, and how everybody immediately know it's Britney? Can they do that with Taylor? Or Miley, or someone else like that?

So I feel like it's very different to be a popstar nowadays than it was back when Britney was in her prime. With Britney, image was very important and played a huge factor to get an artist or a song ingrained in the people's collective mind, whether it was the album cover, a music video, a live performance. But that doesn't matter that much anymore. Now it's more about the "talent" or how the song itself sounds at the moment, but since now everybody chooses what to listen to, artists have their own audiences, and it doesn't matter if Taylor or Ariana or anyone has millions of fans consuming their songs, if someone isn't into Taylor or Ariana, they won't even find out about their latest releases.  Everybody just focuses on what they like. So unless something becomes like suuuper viral, I don't think anyone will ever get close to what Britney once was, and that doesn't mean Britney is untouchable or something, it's just that times have changed, so it's really hard to make comparisons. :yaknow_britney_xfactor_X_factor_talk_tell_chat_you_know:

Adele, Gaga. Maybe Bieber and Taylor.

But none of them had it all like Britney. Britney had huge ww sales, impact, popularity, controversy, influence, huge fame. People and media were obsessed with her even the ones that didnt like her. She became a pop and culture icon right away, a phenomenon.

This was Britney in Italy (a country where the majority of people dont know English as well as the Germans know for example) at just 18 years old and 2 years into her career. And she was that famous in South America, Asia, etc. She became a huge celebrity with huge sales everywhere. Since her no one was close enough to reach that. During Taylors 1989 era Billboard compared her to Britney and that shows the impact Britney had. Also even MTV said back in the day that since Madonna no other female became a sensation like Britney did.

Only ELVIS .  Yes there’s big celebrities but she literally tore down the industry and had the world holding their breath, waiting to see what was next .  She had looks , moves, charisma . In my opinion only celebrities that remind me of her is Marilyn Monroe, Elvis ... Madonna  would be but she just was never that attractive

Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. They had huge starts and potential but then it stopped for some reason reason.

JLo was huge in the 2000.And she is both known and successful as an actress and a singer. She was at NR.1 with a movie and an album the same time. She is until today,as I´m not wrong the only artist who did this. She was a trendsetter like Britney. When she had worn something in her video or for a shooting, you could buy it in a store.Like her jeans jumpsuit, her shoes she wore in her Jenny from The  Block video. When she wore jogging pants everyone wore them. But more classy.

The And Beyonce and Rihanna are huge names too.And as you wrote Miley and Biber. And this ones, but they are older:

Michael Jackson

Madonna

Falco

Rammstein

Spice Girls

Backstreet Boys

Take That (not sure if they were world stars. But they were huge in Europe.Girls even did suicide when they splited)

Elvis

The Beatles

Abba

No one has come that close but if I had to name three it would be Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Justin Beieber and all of them combined equal different parts of Britney’s success. Fashion, sales, personal life. Gaga always takes the cake for most catchy songs and memorable visuals. Taylor comes in second place for that. Beyoncé is an honorable mention as of 2016 and Single Ladies.

I feel like there are like different l versions of insane fame.

Lady Gaga had an insane debut. Literally everything turned gaga for a good 2-3 years. Fashion, imitators etc. I would say it was close to Britney but not as long.

i do think Gaga’s prime helped assist the understanding and acceptance of LGBT people. So I think Gaga is also a very unique type of icon for assisting with a much needed culture shift.

britney is kind of like a Marilyn Monroe figure i feel. Where she obviously was/is insanely successful but much of her star power went beyond their professional work. *** appeal, scandal, personal life etc. so I think her prime was VERY unique.

in terms of prime, like professionally, there have been many stars who have reached the same measurable successes or who have come close. I think Taylor Swift is going to be one of the most remembered artists of our time. Same w Beyoncé. It’s just different to Britney’s prime. They are different brands of icon I feel.

britney is like a Marilyn Monroe / Elizabeth Taylor / Elvis. While Taylor is more of an icon who will be pretty strictly known for her work.

justin b was similar but I don’t think he bridged the gaps in generations. And I don’t think he was ever as famous. My opinion though

miley is great but not even close imo. Same w Ariana. Love both but not nearly as big in any way.

After Britney debuted I'd say Xtina from her debut until back to basics, Beyoncé with her 00s albums, JT with FS/LS, Gaga 2008-2013, Katy with Teenage Dream and Prism, Justin Bieber from My World to Purpose, Miley with Bangerz and Adele with 21 and 25

Only Justin Bieber and One Direction were close, their impact in music, popularity and even in fashion worldwide were almost as high as Britney's... Others like Gaga with the LGBT community or Adele and Taylor with album sales could match in something but others are not even close to be as half of Primeney's impact.

Perhaps Lady Gaga that I can think of in my lifetime. Perhaps maybe Justin Bieber with all his female following but nothing will ever compare to Britney. She was in a different lane. She was EVERYWHERE. I guess it was a different time - she was outrageous, **** and everyone wanted to be her or was jealous of her. She was the IT girl for sure. I’ve never seen anyone like her since.
