Rolling Stone gets slammed for calling One Direction a rock and roll band

And just like that, Rolling Stone lost what little credibility they had by dubbing a boy band as one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time.

There was nothing rock and roll about One Direction at all. Glad Rolling Stone is getting called out.

In all fairness The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Elvis Presley are considered Rock N Roll artists but if their music came out today, they would be boyband pop music or in Elvis' case like a JT or Bruno Mars. They made Rock n Roll music Pop.

So technically I think One Direction mainly did Rock songs but again that kind of rock is now considered Pop. I think we now think of Rock with the likes of Nirvana, Metallica or Green Day.

Also ~rock and roll~ is subjective because it's more of a feeling. You could argue 1D was rock and roll - just maybe not the stereotypical kind or one that we're used to.

What was the real NEED to call them that? "boy band" woud have been fine, it's a category on its own. I guess now they're trying to make them look greater musically than they really were, you know, with nostalgia hitting the western world so hard right now...
