I'm Interested in what songs that became massive hits that you were honestly surprised by? The two that came to mind were Single Ladies and Born This Way. I legit thought that Beyonce was playing a prank on everyone when I first heard Single Ladies. Like I thought the production sounded cheap. Shows what I know.

I thought Single Ladies was a mess, especially released after If I Were A Boy. The whole Sasha Fierce era was pretty terrible, in my opinion, except for maybe Sweet Dreams. But I speculate the Single Ladies video made that song a hit.
