During the localization of the first Pokémon games released in America (1998), translator Nob Ogasawara had nicknamed a Spearow "Britney". Nintendo changed it to "Speary"

The YouTube channel DidYouKnowGaming? makes videos about fun facts and stories about all kinds of videogames. Last week they uploaded a new Pokémon video about the changes the games suffer around the world when they're translated. During the localization of the first Pokémon games released in America, Pokémon Red & Pokémon Blue, Nob Ogasawara was the responsible of translating most of the texts from Japanese to English.

They interviewed him and he revealed that he had nicknamed "Britney" one of the NPC's Pokémon, a Spearow, but Nintendo didn't like it and changed it to Speary.

From the video:

"In Viridian City there's a girl whose nicknamed Spearow in Japanese is called 'Onichan'. To better fit with American culture, Nob changed Spearow's nickname to 'Britney', named after Britney Spears, so something like 'Britney Spearow'. However, the higher ups didn't like this joke one bit and changed Spearow's nickname to 'Speary' and told Nob that any more of this sort of shenanigans would end in instant termination".

This is so interesting  I know this makes me basic, but Red and Blue will always be my favorite. Sometimes I wish I hadn't moved my Mew, Gyarados, and Pikachu I refused to evolve because he was hella cute to the other games.  Ultimately I don't really regret it because I enjoyed having them as I went from game to game, but going back to my copy of Red was never the same. 

Edit: I forgot Crystal was a thing. I really liked Crystal, maybe more than Red.

Omg mine was anime based too. It's usually Roxxy, Britney, and Yui from Curious Play if it's a girl. And when I play as a boy it's Eriol from Cardcaptor Sakura.

I love Cardcaptor Sakura!  Mine were almost exclusively based on Sailor Moon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, or Intial D, but sometimes you'd see P-Chan from Ranma 1/2 or Kagome from Inuyasha.  To this day though Usagi is my go to username or profile name for things like Netflix and Hulu.
