Why did ''Stronger'' only peak at #11 in the US?

It's wasnt radio friendly, the Britards will have you believe that every song before Pretty Girls were international number 1 hits in every country. :wonka:

It honestly only peaked that high because of the physical singles sells.

While I love the song, production wise it wasn't appropriate for what was getting radio play at the time. Her vocals are overproduced and she was already getting backlash for her declining singing ability, lipsyncing and use of vocal effects. This was before heavy use autotune and vocal effects were accepted outside of dance music.

Very interesting question. Let's analyze Stronger's detailed trajectory on the Billboard Hot 100 and other influent Billboard charts.

Debut Date: December 2, 2000
Peak Date: January 27, 2001
Peak Position: #11
Week-by-Week Rundown: 70 - 55 - 55 - 53 - 29 - 22 - 28 - 15 - 11 - 14 - 27 - 29 - 43 - 69 - 74 - // (15 weeks total)
Final Week on Chart: March 10, 2001

The Billboard Hot 100 at that time was composed of radio+sales, so let's see how Stronger performed on the sales charts now.

Hot Singles Sales
Debut Date: December 30, 2000
Peak Date: January 27, 2001
Peak Position: #1
Week-by-Week Rundown: 14 - 11 - 11 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 5 - 5 - 5 - 9 - 12 - 14 - 14 - 23 - 24 - 29 - 29 - 25 - 31 - 35 - 36 - 45 - 45 - 49 - 48 - 48 - 55 - 65 - 69 - 73 - NC - 73 - 71 - // (32 weeks total)
Final Week on Chart For First Run: August 11, 2001
Re-Entry: January 5, 2002: 57 - 56 - 63 - NC - NC - 74 - // (4 weeks total)
Final Week on Chart for Second Run: February 9, 2002

As we can see, the physical release of Stronger definitely had an impact on the song's performance, as the song saw a jump of 24 positions, from #53 to #29, the same week it debuted at #14 on the sales chart. It should also be mentioned that Stronger reached its peak of #11 on the Hot 100 the same week it topped the sales chart, so there's no doubt that Stronger benefited from its physical release.

So, did the radio stopped the song from breaking Top 10? Let's take a look at Stronger's performance on the radio charts.

Radio Songs
Debut Date: December 2, 2000
Peak Date: December 30, 2000
Peak Position: #53
Week-by-Week Rundown: 72 - 59 - 56 - 55 - 53 - 62 - 66 - 66 - // (8 weeks total)
Final Week on Chart: January 20, 2001

Mainstream Top 40 (Pop Songs)
Debut Date: November 18, 2000
Peak Date: December 30, 2000
Peak Position: #17
Week-by-Week Rundown: 35 - 28 - 24 - 19 - 19 - 18 - 17 - 18 - 19 - 19 - 24 - 33 - 36 - // (13 weeks total)
Final Week on Chart: February 10, 2001

Rhytmic
Debut Date: December 9, 2000
Peak Date: December 9, 2000
Peak Position: #37
Week-by-Week Rundown: 37 - 37 - 39 - // (3 weeks total)
Final Week on Chart: December 23, 2000

Stronger was very short-lived on the radio charts and, surprisingly, wasn't charting at all on the Radio Songs chart during the week it peaked at #11. So it's safe to say that the lack of radio support harmed Stronger's performance on the Hot 100, despite the strong sales.

Yeah, this is what I wa talking about, her management firm back then was having bad blood with the radio associations, that's why her songs were all badly charted, if she had a management firm like Mariah's, and released physical CDs for every single, I honestly think she could have had multiple No.1s from 1998-2004.

Perhaps his advisers did't turn to payola because they'd not need hum due to the high album n' concerts sales that supported him. :thelook:

If you think of FF has the highest audience peaks of her career :umwtf::beynah: suspicious

Britney used to tour with Clear Channel Entertainment (iHeart Media today), up until DWAD where the promoter was Concerts West (AEG Live btw).

The only problem in all of that is that CCE owned (owns) almost all radio stations in the US, so for switching parties she was banned from the US radio from late 2001 (a couple of weeks after DWAD's opening and Slave's release I think) till MATM's release.

Well, she's never been a radiostar and it was all based on airplay basically in this era. Oops i did it again peaked at #9, that's not that much better when you think about it.

OIDIA peaked at #9 because they released it only as an airplay single instead of the more common and competitive physical CD format.

If it had a physical release it would definitely secure the top spot knowing that it's Baby One More time 2.0

That was stupid on their part. This song was a smash all over the world except in the US..

but that does not have to do with the fact that its performance in general in the radios has been modes before 2001

Yes and when the Onyx Hotel Tour was being planned, Clear Channel tapped Team Britney and they finally said yes.

MATM was still affected of the radio ban but when The Onyx Tour started, she finally had radio support again and that's when Toxic was released. Toxic enjoyed full radio support and the general public loved it so Britney managed to crack the Top 10 again.

Same with Everytime, it enjoyed full radio support so despite being a ballad, it managed to peak at #14 if I'm not mistaken

Yeah you're right. Everytime peaked at # 15, still great considering Rnb and urban music was the **** at the time.
