Britney Jean & Dr. Luke - a theory

Recommended Posts

In 2013, Britney Jean was released, and we as painfully know, it was a rushed, incoherent mess full of background vocalists getting far too brave. Noticeably, the production was just awful at many times. Where did the high quality production from her past albums go? In particular...why is Dr. Luke only on one song?

Dr. Luke had been all up in Britney's career for some like, 5-6 years, and had just produced the really lovely and well produced Ooh La La for Britney in June of 2013. Come November 2013, Britney Jean is released, and Luke is found only on the bonus track Brightest Morning Star.

Something I want to point out is that the Dr. Luke v. Kesha situation first got public notice in September of 2013. Wikipedia says BJ was still being recorded until October. Now, the sound of Britney Jean leads me to believe that the album was intended to draw inspiration from legendary pop albums from her idols, like Ray of Light, with references to things like spirituality and sense of self prominent. William Orbit, producer of Ray of Light, is even credited for Alien. Ooh La La sounds a lot like Dr. Luke's take on Orbit-style production. It's structure reminds me of the title track of Ray of Light. Why does that matter?

I have a theory that Dr. Luke may have been more heavily present on Britney Jean, and may have been crafting a sound more like Alien, Ooh La La, Brightest Morning Star, etc. I think it could be possible that people in the industry had heard of Dr. Luke's behavior and once the first rumblings came public, maybe they knew more was coming, and as a result Britney's team jumped ship before it hit the fan, nixed work done with Dr. Luke, and rushed to get replacement filler thrown in. I think the album was being rushed regardless, hence back up vocalists on tracks like Passenger, but I think this could possibly be some kind of factor in why Britney Jean was what it was.

What do ya'll think?

OK this post came at a perfect time because I was JUST re-listening to BJ after neglecting it for the past few years...

It's honestly not as terrible as I remember :)

It had some interesting choices (Chillin' with You:selenerz: but some of the songs are really nice to listen to!! And I'm proud of Brit for writing on all of them! :makeitrain:

Perfume was honestly such a fire song but it flopped from the lack of promotion :tiffsniffle:

I think people need to accept that britney was in love with will i am and wanted to work with him so badly and always mentioned him and how much she loves working with him.

She doesn't seem to be that interested in dr.luke even with FF she only mentioned max Martin as if he was the primary producer.

i like the songs that sound genuinely personal or introspective...alien/perfume/passenger/don't cry/the bonus tracks are all good if i ignore the production quality in place & the vocal elephant in the room :zoomzoom:

i'm still sad she didn't write passenger tho...i really wanted her to have written at least like a line for that one

All I read is “I believe, I believe”

it is what it is. Nobody cares about the album anymore, nor ray of light nor anything.

i think we don’t need more of dr rappist  talkings on this place.

you sound like you need a hug (and also someone to help you spell ******)...forums are like at least 50% conjecture, that's literally the point of a forum...discussion. plus we haven't had music for like 4 years and it's boring af...lighten up a bit. and i think some people do care about it...otherwise it wouldn't be brought up as often as it is! the math makes sense xo

No. We demanded a personal album so in their minds that meant no Dr Luke. He only made it to the album because he and will and friends. Dr Luke let Will get on FF so will did the same for Dr Luke. However her was only allowed on because it was a personal song written by Britney. If Dr Luke had any hand in the writing then her would have made another dance album.. which it ended up turning into anyway.

Dr Luke (who is innocent) is a god, downvote me all you want I don't care :thelook: :thelook:

He is definitely a production god, up there with the likes of Orbit, David Guetta, Bloodpop, Bloodshy & Avant and Max Martin. However, I can’t comfortably support him anymore

I think it's better to let Britney Jean alone. Let's pretend that album doesn't even exist :jlostare:. BJ was rushed and they needed something for LV Residency because it would be stupid to do show without new album:mhm:.

They should have just done a Britney Spears: Piece of Me Live From Last Vegas soundtrack, with lead promo single Work ***** and new tracks Alien and Perfume (which she went on to perform during POM anyway) on the soundtrack, and then filled the rest of the soundtrack with classic tracks she performed during POM. Rushing an actual studio album for a Vegas residency was a mistake and tarnished her discography.

Had they done a soundtrack, Work *****'s music video would have been perfect for POM promo since it shows the residency during the MV. But then they would have benefited by having an Alien mv also linked to the residency, maybe have her getting off the stage in the MV, suddenly her smile and excitement turns to sadness as we see her sit down in dressing room, all alone. The MV just plays out with her walking through the busy Planet Hollywood casinos in slow motion as everyone around her moves in high speeds, similar to the Spice Girls 2 Become 1 mv.

Then they eventually introduce the Perfume MV works as she drives off the Vegas strip through the desert with her lover and eventually into a motel. :praisega:

I’ve thought this too. But the album is not cohesive by any means in my opinion. The first four tracks of the album are such a rollercoaster. The somber sounds of Alien, segues into the hard EDM track Work *****, then the soft ballad Perfume, and back into a hard hitting EDM track It Should Be Easy. It’s ALL over the place.

I don’t support Dr. Luke, but if he did anything else for Britney Jean I’d be interested in hearing it. But like someone else said, I think it’s likely that he was more focused on Prism.

As far as the tracks recorded, I share the popular theory that Britney didn’t record anything else for the album. That’s why we haven’t gotten any demos from the album that weren’t used on the album.

Also stop coming for Myah! Lol she had no control of her vocals being used for lead. That is the producer’s fault.

The basic problem was that Britney didn't give a ******* **** for that album, Will.I.Am wanted to work with Britney SO BAD after Scream & Shout success and somehow Britney was ok with that and didn't fight for her vision because... well, how many times worked that for her in the past? (specially right after 2010 breakdown and Femme Fatale)

A Britney Jean album with Dr Luke could have been awesome, it shouldn't have been an EDM album: Unconditionally, Legendary Lovers, Ghost, Love Me (that wasn't Dr Luke's, I think it was from Bloodshy but whatever) those Prism songs would make Britney Jean cohesive along with Perfume, Alien, Passenger, Hold On Tight and Brighest Morning Star, that would be the personal slow album we deserve

She did talk about Dr. Luke during FF era

Dr. Luke has become a big-name producer in his own right since your last album – is it different working with him now?
Not really. We have known each other for a really long time. Most people don’t know this but we actually worked together when I was recording “Blackout.” He was incredible back then and he has only gotten better over the years.

Dr. Luke said last fall that “I want [the sound] to get harder in some ways, and maybe a little more deep into electronic — grimier.” Did you have that same agenda for the album? Do you feel like you accomplished that?
When we first sat down to talk about Femme Fatale I knew I wanted to make a dance album that was ahead of everything else out there but unique to me which is why I was so picky with the recording process. I only wanted songs that I immediately connected to. I also wanted to make sure that this album was completely different from Circus or anything else I had ever recorded. I love Circus but I wanted something darker and edgier. I also wanted to make an album and didn’t want to just record a bunch of songs and put them together. I think Femme Fatale is really connected from start to finish.

What is it about Max Martin that makes you so comfortable collaborating with him? How much bigger of a role did he take on this album than he did for “Circus”?
Max played a huge role on this album and he has been there since the beginning so there is such a huge level of trust. He gets exactly what I am saying when I tell him what I want and don’t want musically.  His melodies are incredible and he is always coming up with weird sounds, which I love. The whistle on “I Wanna Go” still gets me every time I hear it. Who would have thought of that? There is nobody I feel more comfortable collaborating with in the studio.

How would you characterize the studio relationship between Max and Dr. Luke?
They are two peas in a pod. It’s a total bromance.

It felt like a bundle deal gone wrong (album, documentary and vegas announcement) nonetheless Britney prevailed with her residency due to her discography and legendary status. They should have released Work *****, perfume and two other tracks with the documentary. It didn’t make sense to release an album for her residency when it had nothing to do with the album.
