Britney's dream pop tracks

Recommended Posts

i get what you mean (and i love this style) but dream pop is pretty different from that. dream pop is a predominantly rock genre that grew out of psychedelic styles and post punk in the 80s. i think britney would sound amazing in that style though actually, but it is different from what you described those songs as

for the songs you listed;

and then we kiss - this one actually could've been dream pop but it has too much of a dance beat. if you strip out that backing beat, made brit's vocals less loud/pulsing in the chorus and enhance that guitar it would not be incorrect imo to at least say it's on the fringe of dream pop

sometimes, born to make you happy, dont let me be the last to know - these are just teen pop ballads. they're twinkly and glittery bc it's teen pop, it's just lacking the big booming beats a non-ballad teen pop track would have

touch of my hand, breathe on me - this would be called ambient dance pop. it was kind of brit's thing during ITZ i feel. it's got the relaxed soft vocals and amazing atmosphere of ambient pop but is faster pace with a stronger beat than ambient pop normally ever would be. it's a super duper cool little sub genre that wasn't very widespread, but was britney's bread and butter for a sec in the mid 2000s

everytime - ambient pop, for sure

heaven on earth - cannot say off the top of my head what i would call this, but it's literally almost just a freescha song with britney vocals over it and more glossy production. fr listen to their 2007 album on spotify, they just lifted like five or six tracks and combined them with nicole morier lyrics and brit+nicole vocals. that album i spoke of is listed as IDM ("intelligent" dance music), ambient, and broadly electronic. it does mention shoegaze (an offshoot of dream pop) as a minor genre style on the freescha record, which is much more stripped and lofi than ***, so i'm not sure if it could readily be applied, but whatever genre you would call this i want more of it lmfao

break the ice, perfect lover - these are quintessential electropop tracks. a (not always agreed upon) distinction is made not uncommonly between synth pop, which was mostly in the 80's then revived usually in different styles (electroclash, electropop, darkwave, vaporwave). most of the late 00's early 10's releases were firmly in that new electropop sound (tik tok, california gurls, bad romance, etc) but some sounded more like outright revivals (la roux's debut album). brit was one of the early pioneers of this sound so BO has more retro sounds than most, but these are definitely in the late 00's/early 10's electropop style

(i'm shocked you didn't mention outta this world, it fits the style you're describing better than almost all the other songs)

unusual you - this one, yes, could be argued as at least partially dream pop, but really it's truly predominantly dream pop imo. it's an oddball in her discography but it would be great if she played with the style more

blur - this one can be categorized with heaven on earth and outta this world

rock me in - hard to categorize off the top of my head but it's def too bouncy and danceable to be dream pop imo. i get where you get that though for this one

amnesia - the vocals are too bouncy and the guitar needs to be enhanced, maybe slow the song a tad, then yes i would probably agree

out from under - i originally said no but listening to it, i can see what you mean. i think it would be a secondary aspect of it, but yes i actually do get this one now

i wanna go, seal it with a kiss, criminal, alien - def not, i don't see elements of dream pop in any of these

brightest morning star - i can see why you listed this one more than the previous 4 but i still gotta say i don't hear it much at all

hold on tight - this is almost like...ambient trap? lmfao it sounds almost like a backing track made for ariana tbh. i guess ambient trap or ambient trap-pop

invitation - this dips back into the style she was in for breathe on me and touch of my hand, ambient dance pop, but less organic sounding cause of the time period

just love me - def don't hear it, this song bops hard though

coupure electrique - this one is insanely ambient. i would say it's a sort of dark ambient sound. it's easily one of, if not her most, experimental song, at least outside of blackout. i adore this song, one of my fav brit tracks ever

all in all you actually listed a lot of britney tracks i would put in my top 40/50 incl like 3 in my top 8 or so (touch of my hand, heaven on earth, coupure electrique) but i don't think much of them other than i think unusual you out from under would qualify as dream pop. and then we kiss + amnesia could've made it there but would need substantial changes to fit the bill. overall i think the term you want here is ambient pop/ambient dance/ambient dance pop, not dream pop
