Leader Jordan Miller Posted April 8, 2020 Leader Share Posted April 8, 2020 The Weeknd takes the number one spot on the Billboard 200 with his new record, After Hours. He beat 5SOS again tho their fans don't think so. Abel is opening up about his new record. In an interview with Variety, The Weeknd says he believes his music changed the landscape of pop. Does that make him a main pop boy? Only the MJ of the 2010s. “‘House of Balloons’ literally changed the sound of pop music before my eyes,” he says without exaggeration. “I heard ‘Climax,’ that [2012] Usher song, and was like, ‘Holy f—, that’s a Weeknd song.’ It was very flattering, and I knew I was doing something right, but I also got angry. But the older I got, I realized it’s a good thing.” (Usher declined to comment for this story.) Did he lie? I'm super interested to hear your thoughts. There's no denying Weeknd's massive impact... right? 1 Quote Exhale+ | Apparel | YouTube Link to comment

GODNA IS A QUEEN
He may have had a major influence on the sound of R&B and the shift in direction towards PBR&B in the 10s but to say he changed the sound of pop music is an absolute reach. 3 Quote Link to comment
Thecodeman25
I don’t hear the similarity with CLIMAX. Also usher probably hadn’t even heard of The Weeknd at that point. I know most of us hadn’t. Quote Link to comment
SelinaKyle
BS detected ! Diplo produced Climax, and he was stating to rise in pop anyway ! And its thanks to MIAs "Paper Planes" and Santigold masterful debut album with him. I doubt Diplo and Usher heard House of Balloons, coming from a small debut artist. Also both sounds a LOT like Prince, who always had a huge influence in male R&B/Pop singers... He is just another male ego in the business... 3 Quote Link to comment

studlygeorge
He didn’t lie. I would definitely say he popularized the RnB direction pop music took following his tracks on the original Fifty Shades soundtrack. Although “stripper pop” was slowly making its way since 2013 with Miley with We Can’t Stop and Lorde with her debut Quote Link to comment
RealLarryRudolph
Fun fact: I saw him at McMaster University when he was a literal nobody and it was low key better than the onyx hotel tour... 1 Quote Link to comment

ColdAsFire88
I stan The Weekend. I actually enjoy him more than Drake. There's something about Drake that annoys me. I cannot pin point it. Maybe it's his obsession with Rihanna? Maybe it's pretty boy crafted "hip hop". You could say the same for The Weekend though...but there's grit to The Weekends craft that I dig. I like HIP HOP like Crime Mob HIP HOP. Ghetto gonna meet you out back hip hop. A lot of these newbies are pretty merchandise with some hype BUT I feel The Weekends music and I feel that he's like a chameleon. He literally can do any genre IMO. 1 Quote Link to comment

Britney'sBish
Dafuq is he snorting to come say some shi like that? He's got some good songs, but no way in hell did he change any landscape... Without his music he's annoying AF! 1 3 Quote Link to comment
MyLittlePopstar
Yeah, maybe he changed it for the worse... It does seem like after he became popular the music that did well on the charts stated to suck... love blinding lights tho 1 Quote Link to comment
♕P.R.I.N.C.E.♕
He surely didn't lie, and it's good that he's aware of his impact on music. He's a trend setter and those 2011 songs of his were ahead of their time. He deserves every bit of success he has because he is brilliant. Quote Link to comment
BritneySpurs
That's a joke. He himself is a Michael Jackson rip-off. I like him but he's not original. 1 Quote Link to comment
