Lil Jay
So we fans always complain how some of Britney's biggest hits like Oops or Toxic didn't peak at #1, instead just peaking at #9 or something. SO, I was thinking, and found this cool website Media Traffic, it's basically a global chart. It includes every single country in the world, at least these countries with official music charts. And actually i was really impressed with numbers. I will compare USA and whole world SONG TITLE U.S. PEAK (number of weeks at peak) GLOBAL PEAK (number of weeks at peak) ...Baby One More Time #1 2 weeks #1 8 weeks Sometimes #21 2 weeks #5 1 week (You Drive Me) Crazy #10 1 week #1 1 week Born To Make You Happy - - #1 1 week From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart #14 2 weeks - - Oops!...I Did It Again #9 2 weeks #1 9 weeks Lucky #23 1 week #2 6 weeks Stronger #11 1 week #3 1 week Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know - - #10 1 week I'm A Slave 4 U #27 1 week #5 5 weeks Overprotected - - #6 1 week I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman - - #6 1 week Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) #86 1 week - - I Love Rock'n'Roll - - - - Boys (feat. PokemonSpears
This is why for most US fans it's hard to understand why songs like Sometimes, Crazy, Lucky, Stronger or Overprotected (the standard version) are so remembered many years later. It's not only the nostalgia (which of course affects too) but they were actually considered hits back then around the world. Me Against the Music is the only one I find kinda odd, because I really don't remember it being that impactful, at least here in Mexico. Maybe it did sell a lot, but I don't remember hearing it on the radio or the video being that popular on MTV as her other singles. Link to comment

I think MATM got a lot of attention because of Madonna and because it was shortly after The VMAs and Britneys "break" so thats why it got a lot of attention around the world. Im not suprised that it got to Nr.1 but I am suprised that it stayed there for 4 weeks. Link to comment

But you have to consider the fact that even they were not radio hits myb, they were all big on MTV, and that was as important as Youtube nowadays... So people (at least young people) looked on Overprotected and Not a girl like hits too. Link to comment

Blackout93
No matter the chart peak. Her discography aged very well. That’s the important thing. Link to comment
THE BAJAN VIBE
U.S has bad taste, I guess. In the BRITNEY era, she was banned in the U.S. That album deserved MORE recognition, it's a masterpiece. Link to comment
