Okay, yeah, the list is messy, but these three are there rightfully. But this one....

Was just cringey compared to shocking. Anyone who's had the misfortune of watching an interview with Feldman expected it.

Those performances are shocking though, except for the Beyonce being pregnant one which was not shocking at all :juggingu:

It's not a "Best performances" list but I'd still add the VMA 2000's performance. It was shocking at the time seen as a "striptease" on stage.

How is BITING THE HEAD OFF OF A BAT not automatically #1? No one cares or even remembers that Lenny Kravitz once went commando with leather pants; what rocker hasn’t? :whatitellu:

I’m also surprised none of Marylin Manson’s performances are on the list. He’s done some really outrageous stuff, even for a shock rocker (at least in terms of what’s considered offensive with respect to stereotypical American sensibilities, such as both burning and ripping out the pages of the Bible while on stage, wiping his *** with the US flag, etc.):

Eminem was snubbed big time from this list too; he was the only 2000s artist more controversial than Britney. Just off the top of my head, his performance of “The Real Slim Shady” with an army of clones at the VMAs, and his embrace with Elton John at the Grammys following a performance of “Stan,” were literally talked about for years on end.

*There are still articles about how iconic and revolutionary the “Slim Shady” performance was:

*2015 article about how game-changing the performance was:

His detractors were seriously obsessed with him, to the point he almost always had hordes of protesters picketing him for hours outside of the arena/stadium (or even the hotel he was staying at) whenever he was performing somewhere. And, from the late 90s until present day, they have continually protested every single time he’s nominated for a Grammy. Even the MJ fans turned rabid whenever Eminem parodied him in “Without Me” (despite Eminem very famously having made fun of every single relevant artist/pop culture figure, ever):

As far as the 2003 VMAs, I still don’t quite see why two (or three) straight women kissing, particularly during a wedding-themed performance, is really THAT shocking.

If anything, Adam Lambert’s mess of a debut award show performance, wherein the actually gay singer made out with his bandmate mid-song, was far more “shocking,” especially since it was banned and censored thereafter, whereas Britney/Madonna/Xtina’s kiss never was.

Further, Madonna’s original performance of “Like A Virgin” at the VMAs, way back in 1984, was infinitely more shocking:

By 2004, it was very hard (if not practically impossible) for Madonna to do anything truly controversial in terms of novelty, and frankly, even the same statement remains true, albeit to a far lesser extent, with respect to both Britney and Xtina as well.

But with regard to Britney’s solo VMA performances, I agree that 2000 was far more shocking at the time than 2001. You have to remember how she was still the world’s most famous teenage virgin at the time. Hence all the reactions, even from fellow celebrities:

closed the list  when i see bey's pregnancy :tiffsniffle:

The way it all transpired, and the subsequent feigned sense of shock, remains beyond stupid, but in all fairness, it actually could have been fairly “shocking” considering how famous and private both Beyoncé and Jay-Z have historically been.

But in order for that tactic to be successful, it would’ve obviously required her to remain in hiding beforehand, waiting for the actual reveal to occur mid-performance, rather than making it painfully obvious to everyone RIGHT BEFOREHAND whilst on the red carpet:

Like...who the **** is shocked that the above image depicted a pregnant woman? Who couldn’t have figured that out, even without her performing whilst wearing tight maternity clothes, very deliberately unpopping the blazer containing the obvious baby bump, and then literally rubbing her belly onstage? :girlwhat:

That’s not even a performance, but merely a (frankly rather desperate) PR announcement. Updating a bunch of teenagers on developments pertaining to a stranger’s family planning does not exactly equal entertainment.

If Beyoncé had to be included in this list, I think her appearance at the 50th SB halftime show qualified as far more “shocking” in that its unapologetic message regarding police brutality generated a lot of controversy and criticism not just from the media and general public alike, but even extremely well-known politicians (e.g., even the corpse formerly known as Rudy Giuliani chimed in and called it “outrageous,” which might be the very last time he uttered a statement he genuinely personally believed to be true).

Apparently, “#Boycott Beyonce” was even trending following the halftime show, and a protest about her performance was even planned—until literally no one bothered to show up (I guess the SJW brand of white supremacists are collectively a very lazy bunch). :orangu:
