Guest
September 7, 2018, marks the 18th anniversary of Britney Spears’ 2000 MTV VMA Performance, where she performed her remake of Rolling Stones’ 1965 “Satisfaction” hit, and “Oops!…I Did It Again,” the lead single off her sophomore album Oops!…I Did It Again. On this night, the Princess of Pop definitively shed her teeny-bop persona and cemented her status as one of the most iconic performers of our time. Quote “It’s not unusual for a notable — or notorious — VMA moment to stand out as one of the most important in an artist’s career, nor is it weird for them to synch up with other massive milestones for the performers, like historic record sales, or, y'know, the birth of their first child. By that metric, no other artist has had a connection to the heart of the VMAs quite like Britney Spears.” (How Britney Spears Made the VMAs Her Vehicle for Transformation) Quote “And finally she just looked at me and was like, ‘Look. Grab where you need to grab to rip this f—king thing off so it comes off when it’s supposed to.’ ” (Inside 3 Iconic MTV VMAs Moments With Madonna, Britney and Lady Gaga) Quote "For a few brief moments, it was as if child pornography had gone over-ground." ((The Dirty Little Secret about Rock's Teen Idols What are The Backstreet Boys, N'Sync and Britney Spears really saying?) Quote "For many of us who were teenagers in the 2000s, Britney Spears is the VMAs... I remember exactly where I was when Britney ripped off her suit and exposed a nude-colored bra and pants covered in rhinestones " (Why I'm Still Mad About Britney Spears's MTV Vanguard Award Tribute) Quote “Looking closely, it's clear that she basically fell out of the top. A wardrobe malfunction, but one that Spears never let anyone see. The dramatic hairflip and the camera angle made it an easy moment to miss. But it's there, clear as day" (Britney Spears's 2000 MTV VMAs Performance Almost Ended In Disaster) Quote “Girl done went from 'The Mickey Mouse Club' to the strip club!” (Marlon Wayans, VMAs 2000 co-host) Quote "We saw the performance and were immediately like, 'Wow, this is clearly an iconic moment in her career...it was crystal clear in everyone's mind we were watching a special moment," (Meredith Rutledge-Borger, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's assistant curator) Comments/thoughts? (Where were you when this iconic moment aired? Age?) Let it out. In celebration of this performance’s 18th birthday, let’s give it proper respect! Let’s go back to a time right before YouTube, smartphones, or cell phones for that matter, Perez Hilton, mass media culture, massive internet fan culture. There were no spoilers, leaked info to the press, excessive media coverage via the internet/social media like there is now. Let’s recapture that global excitement surrounding this iconic moment and put it on this thread! Hit the upvote please! Link to comment
Phartcloud
I watched this as it happened. It took a good hour or so to pick my jaw up off the floor. Phucking phenomenal, and hands down better than 2001 VMA. Link to comment

I made sure to record it on VHS so I could obsessively rewatch afterwards! Link to comment
GodneyLovin
I remember watching this live and right as Britney did the reveal I looked at my mom to see her with her mouth open just staring at the tv... then the look at my step dad like is she serious? Haha Link to comment
GodneyLovin
Also, I don't believe that she camd out of her bra at the end. Hower, there is once split second when shes still on her feet dancing that you can see her bra open up and her full **** is exposed. Literally the fastest lil second. Anyone know which part? Lmao Link to comment

armokid77
i swear to god i dont care what ANYONE says this is literally her best performance of all time. everyone always brings up the 2001 vma's but for me this one always topped it. i dont know what it is. the attitude, the choreography, the LOOK, EVERYTHING about it is flawless. i need like a super phucking 4k hd version of it to have forever but mtv stays uploading the same 2001 vma performance every year instead to boost their sh!tty views but whatever i guess . glorified.ho
Pretty much her best performance of all time. Just seeing her run from point A to point B is magical. Precise moves and out of this world energy. Link to comment

I think this one wins over 2001 for me too just because she sings the intro live. Link to comment

Mr_Steven_Spears
I was 10 when she done this, properly my favourite performance by her. Everything about the outfit/reveal, the attitude, the choreography. She cemented her status that night Link to comment

Britney2003
I was 10 when she did the 2000 VMA's. I love this performance but my favourite one is the one with Madonna. There was something so badass about her because almost everybody hated her at this point. Everyone was against her and she just came out and slapped Justin, Eminem, Avril Lavigne, and everyone who hated her in the face with that performance and attitude. She was more fierce, wild and on point than she ever was when she was liked by everyone. She was the underdog and it was incredible. Every performance slayed. She made girls who hated her and guys who bashed her jealous. She MADE everyone watch her. Link to comment
