MTV Is Relaunching 'TRL,' Making VMA 'Moonman' Gender Neutral

MTV is bringing Total Request Live back. In a new interview with The New York Times, MTV president Chris McCarthy reveals that the channel’s once-iconic music video countdown show, which originally ran from 1998 to 2008, will be relaunching in October, and a new TRL studio facing Times Square is already under construction.

“If we’re going to come back and reinvent MTV, the studio is a given,” he says. “It is the centerpiece.” The new TRL will run an hour a day at first, potentially building to two to three hours a day as the show develops. Five co-hosts, including rapper and comedian DC Young Fly and Chicago radio host Erik Zachary, will be taking over for Carson Daly.

McCarthy is also developing a reality show about gender-nonconforming teens called We Are They, and he’s going all in on gender neutrality at MTV. He’s already made the acting categories in MTV’s annual Movie and TV Awards gender neutral, and soon, the Video Music Awards’ Moonman trophy will instead be called the Moon Person.

Younger me wants to be excited; older me realizes this'll mostly be showcasing music and newer acts I don't care about. I'm torn. 

I guess if it helps the younger generation connect to music and artists, then that's all that matters. I hope they enjoy it like we did.

Nevertheless, you do have a point but like @fucknfurter said, it's probably going to be showcasing newer artists and not someone like Britney unless it becomes a thing again (which I doubt).

The industry is so different now than when TRL was around, I don't see how it will be successful with the younger demographic. Obviously a desperate attempt to revive MTV after it became a trashy hub for shitty reality shows

I don't think Britney would be taken in consideration unless we ask hard for her. But we're not that powerful anymore. We couldn't even make her win on those radio Saturday polls or whatever they were called.

They sure will use her as a way to promote the show, and bring back the nostalgia, but as everybody has said in this thread, there'll only be place for the newer artists. Whenever they release videos they will be included on the top automatically but if Britney releases anything in the upcoming months, we would have to fill them with requests for her to even make it to the top 10.
